Diversity and inclusion at the German Patent and Trade Mark Office

The German Patent and Trade Mark Office signs the Diversity Charter and commits to diversity as a key to success
The German Patent and Trade Mark Office (DPMA) has signed the Diversity Charter, thereby sending a clear signal in favour of a prejudice-free and forward-looking working culture. The Diversity Charter is a nationwide initiative to promote diversity in the workplace. By signing the Charter, the DPMA commits to creating a working environment that is free from prejudice – and in which all staff are valued, regardless of age, ethnic origin and nationality, gender and gender identity, physical and mental abilities, religion and belief, sexual orientation and social background.
To implement this Charter, we will:
- foster an organisational culture characterised by mutual respect and appreciation. We will create the conditions for both managers and employees to recognise, share and live by these values. In doing so, they have a special responsibility.
- review our HR processes and ensure that they do justice to the diverse skills and talents of all employees as well as our performance standards.
- recognise diversity within and outside the organisation, value the potential it holds, and utilise it to the benefit of the company or institution.
- Make the content of the Charter the subject of internal and external dialogue.
- Provide annual public updates on our activities and progress in promoting diversity and inclusion.
- Inform our workforce about the benefits of diversity and involve them in the implementation of the Charter.
In this context, the concept of diversity encompasses the core dimensions of age, social background, migration history and nationality, sexual orientation, religion and belief, physical and mental abilities, gender and gender identity.
The aim of the Diversity Charter is to promote recognition, appreciation and the inclusion of diversity in the workplace, thereby creating a prejudice-free working environment.
Signing the Charter is an important step – but at the same time it is a commitment to actively embrace and further develop diversity. We will therefore promote diversity, equal opportunities and respectful coexistence within the DPMA through further measures and initiatives.
