Patent attorney training

Within the framework of the patent attorney training, the DPMA provides training in the field of industrial property protection.

Patent attorneys work as advisors, specialised in the field of industrial property protection. The required qualifications for this career are a university degree in a science, engineering or a technical subject and a subsequent almost three-year training under supervision of a patent attorney and at the patent authorities. After the training the candidates must pass a written and oral qualifying examination.

Employees who have worked for many years as patent experts in the companies of their employers may also be admitted to the qualifying examination even without undergoing the three-year training.

A member of the patent attorney profession in another European country may become a German patent attorney if he/she successfully passes a special qualifying examination.

The German Patent and Trade Mark Office decides on the basis of the educational backgrounds of the candidates whether they can enter the patent attorney profession. The DPMA organises the training and the examination. After passing the examination, they will be allowed to bear the title "Patentassessor" (patent agent) and request to be admitted to practice free-lance as patent attorneys.
